What is Inky Fingers Comic Gang?
Inky Fingers Comic Gang is a series of monthly workshops that I have run (with a few special guest hosts) on Kaurna land (Adelaide) since 2016. The sessions are aimed at young people aged 8–14 years old and teach drawing and writing skills specifically for illustration and comics making. Each month is a different standalone activity, so participants can come to one session or all of them and still get something out of the experience.
I started these sessions because I was a kid who loved to draw comics (but not much else) and I remember finding it hard to find my people, even at art classes. I wanted to create a space for awkward comics-loving young people to find like-minded new friends or spend time with old pals.
Inky Fingers’ first home was Greenlight Comics, who not only supported the group but also support local comics creators of all ages. Since 2016, Inky Fingers has grown from one monthly comics sketch group into four: the current locations for Inky Fingers Comic Gang meetings are Noarlunga Library, Mount Barker Library, Glandore Community Centre and (as of 2025) Campbelltown Library.
If you’re a library or community centre in Kaurna (Adelaide) looking to host this style of monthly comics & drawing workshops, send me a message via my online contact form. I’d love to run more Inky Fingers-style workshops!
